Kipper Sailing's RYA Coastal Skipper Courses teaches you: The Collision Regulations, navigation; pilotage; meteorology and seamanship to the standard required to skipper a cruising yacht safely by day and night on passages of up to around 60 miles (e.g. cross Channel) in tidal coastal waters.
This course runs Saturday morning, though the week and finishes the following Sunday, which means you only need take 5 days off work.
The first 4 days are spent in the classroom on picturesque Lymington Quay, where you first brush up on the basics of navigation, meteorology and the rule of the road as taught on a Day Skipper Course. You then go on to study: The Collision Regulations in greater depth; learn secondary port tidal height calculations; advanced meteorology and the skills necessary to plan an offshore passage. On the afternoon of Day 4 you will sit the RYA Coastal Skipper Exam.
Then it's off to sea for 5 days. After making sure that everyone is familiarised with Kipper and knows what to do in an emergency and weather permitting, we then embark on a cross-Channel passage by night, to either France or The Channel Islands, to put what you've leant in the classroom into practice. Subsequently we visit a different port each day, until the final Saturday, when make a return passage to the UK, allowing plenty of time to get back to Lymington on Sunday with a degree of contingency to allow for the possibility of adverse weather.
Kipper is probably the best equipped sailing school boat in the UK for teaching Coastal Skipper. She is configured for ocean sailing with the very latest Raymarine C120W chartplotter with HD Digital Radar; Class B (active) AIS; Satcom C; SSB; a radio modem; 2 EPIRBs; a SeaMe active radar reflector; a state-of-the art, gyro stabilised autopilot; a Pacific Windpilot windvane; digital compass; PC; generator; microwave and diesel heater. All sail controls can be adjusted from the cockpit and there is a large sprayhood to hide behind if the going gets rough. Your instructor, John Corden, is a highly experienced offshore sailor, RYA Yachtmaster Instructor; Radar Instructor and VHF Instructor.
